Summer camp for children treated for cancer, „We can do everything” – 2013, will be held from 12-21st July 2013 on Mount Zlatibor in the private resort „The neighbor“ (“Kod Komše”). Camp is organized by the association „Čika Boca“, sponsored by Janko Tipsarević, with the support of Serbian Ministry of Youth and Sport and similar citizens organizations “Zvončica” („Tinker Bell“), “Uvek sa decom” („Always with the children“) and youth association „MladiCe“ (YouthC)
Since children’s cancer has evolved from an inevitably fatal disease to a treated chronic illness, participation in camps for children treated with cancer brings many benefits. Although these children have some limitations, they are still just kids and still want to be treated in the same way as children who do not have cancer. They want to run, play, swim and enjoy being with their peers.
Inclusion into summer camps specifically designed and tailored for their needs helps those children a lot in many ways.
EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR MALIGNANCY TREATMENTS IMPLIES THAT THE PRIMARY GOALS OF TREATING CHILDRENS CANCER ARE:
RECOVERY FROM ALL SIGNS OF DISEASE
ACHIEVING THE STAGE WITH LITTLE OR NO RISK FOR DISEASE REAPPEARANCE
2. PROLONGATION AND LIFE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
RESTORING THE FUNCTIONAL HEALTH
Second primary goal of treatment is not yet properly considered in Serbia and specialized rehabilitation centers for the recovery of these children, in order to improve the quality of life are still in their infancy. Camp provides recreation and learning useful skills for dealing with the many issues that arise from treatment.
WHY DOES THE CHILDREN WITH MALIGNANCY NEED CAMPS?
The camp provides psychological empowerment for children, reduce their anxiety and fears. During interaction with their peers children easily socialize. Often, as a part of treatment, children remain with some physical handicap. Changing physical appearance is a constant reminder that children with cancer are different from the other children. A side effect of the changing appearance of the child affects his/her self-esteem. Camp is the place where children gain a new life experience.
WHERE DOES CAMP IS HOLDING?
The camp will be held from 12th to 21st July 2013. Aware of the need and importance to provide camps for children with malignancy, “Čika Boca” has decided to move forward with the organization and implementation of the camp for children ages 7 to 18 years treated for malignancy (without their parents). We chose mountain Zlatibor, because of the adequate altitude of approximately 1000 m. The climate is ideal for the treatment of pulmonary diseases and improves blood count. This is preferable because after treatment children often have weak immune systems and poor blood count.
Location and place for summer camp is privately owned resort „Kod Komše“ (“The neighbour”). Owner of the resort (Milovan Gordić) is Engineer in Mechanical sciences and also Master of solar energy
Accommodation facilities provide for 50 guests / camp participants and are hotel type.
Facilities and surrounding space is adequate to provide for all our needs, activities and nutrition. It is 5 kilometres away from the centre of Zlatibor settlement and 3 kilometres from Zlatibor railway station. In a radius of 20 km, there are ethno village Sirogojno, Mount Tara, Mokra Gora, Šargan Eight, Emir Kusturica’s Mećavnik, Tornik peak, with open summer sky lift.
CAMP PARTICIPANTS will be SOLELY CHILDREN WHO HAVE FINISHED ACTIVE ONCOLOGICAL TREATMENT and are in remission (at least for more than 6 months). Children who still receive some kind of treatment will not be invited to this camp, as a precaution and possible medical problems.
CHILDREN will be age 7 to 18. They will be divided in groups and according to their age as follows:
Age 7-9, 10–14 and 15-18. Division into peer groups serves for better children adaptation and easier organisation and conduction of activities planned for all participants
This will be the first camp in Serbia for children with malignant disease, unaccompanied (unaccompanied guardian / parent). It is important that the child is basically independent and is able to be separated from their parents/guardians for 10 days.
Part of the parent’s worst fears is to send the child away from them, and because of that it is necessary to deal with separation experience in controlled and protected conditions while kids finally brake out a little from under parental wings, and parents are getting used to the idea that it is time for the children to become more independent and to let them manage everyday life on their own.
For small children we arranged to engage volunteers to help them in everyday chores (personal hygiene, hygiene of the room, meals, going to bed, assistance with more demanding activities). For each three children one volunteer/trainer is provided.
CAMP IS FREE OF CHARGE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS!
